Sewing at home – necessary equipment and accessories

Sewing at home is a brilliant way to spend your free time and develop your manual skills. However, in order to be able to sew yourself, you will need specific accessories and appropriate equipment. We suggest what you may need at the beginning of your sewing adventure.

There are many benefits of sewing clothes at home on your own. First of all, you decide how exactly they will look like. You choose the material yourself, the cut…in fact, everything. However, to start you will need various accessories and sewing equipment. We suggest which ones to choose.

Sewing machine

Sewing on the machine is certainly much easier and allows you to create more interesting and complex clothes than sewing by hand. However, the machine is not equal to the machine, and on the market you will find machines in the price range from 100 to even several thousand. What to pay attention to when choosing the equipment? First of all, the machine you choose should be built of metal components. This will allow it to serve you for years, even with heavy use. Such solidly made components can also cope with extremely thick materials or with several layers of clothing. It is also worth paying attention to the gripper. It is good that it is also made of metal, which will help in a situation when you get a tangled thread. Also choose a machine of a well-known and proven brand, such as Brother machines, Janome machines or Singer machines.

Needles and threads

The basis of sewing is, of course, needles and thread. It is worth to start your shopping with them. For starters, choose good hand sewing needles, such as stitching needles and penny needles for pulling ties. Machine needles are also a real must have, and you’ll especially want universal needles of different thicknesses in stock. If you’re going to be sewing knits, be sure to also purchase special needles for that particular material, also in different thicknesses. You won’t be without thread either. It is best to choose viscose or polyester threads for your machine. Cotton ones, however, will be a good option for hand sewing.

Sewing scissors

Without good, sharp tailor’s scissors it is almost impossible to start sewing adventure. Thanks to them you will efficiently cut any material without destroying and tugging it. Choose those with profiled handle, which will lie comfortably in your hand and this will make them more accurate. A slightly smaller scissor with a curved tip can also be useful for more precise tasks. You might also like to have a pair of thread cutters in your collection. These will come in handy for cleaning out threads on your garment, especially if your machine is not equipped with a scissors function that cuts threads after each stitch.

Items for measuring

Even if you only plan on sewing simple bags or pillowcases in the beginning, you still need something to measure the fabric properly. For this purpose, buy soap or sewing crayons. However, the latter option is a bit riskier because it doesn’t wash off all materials. You can also cut down on expenses and use homemade bar soap, which will be the safest and cheapest option. A dressmaker’s measuring tape, commonly known as a centimeter, will also come in handy, as will a variety of rulers and eccentrics. Make sure you have a box with compartments to store all these accessories.
